Description

You are a citizen of the fictional communist country of Arstotzka in the game "Papers, Please". As a newly hired immigration inspector, your job is to review the passports and other documents of people trying to enter Arstotzka, and determine whether they should be allowed to cross the border or not.
Each day, you receive a set of rules and regulations from the Ministry of Admission, which dictate which documents are required for entry and which discrepancies to look out for. You must carefully inspect each person's papers, and use a set of tools such as a magnifying glass and a rulebook to verify their authenticity.
As you progress through the game, the rules become increasingly complex and the stakes higher. You may encounter forged documents or people trying to sneak in without proper papers. Your job is not only to follow the rules but also to use your judgement and intuition to make the right decisions.
You are also faced with moral dilemmas, such as whether to allow a mother to enter to reunite with her son, even though her papers are not in order. Each decision you make has consequences, affecting not only the individuals involved but also your family's well-being.
The game is set in a bleak, oppressive world where poverty, corruption, and violence are rampant. The pixelated graphics and atmospheric music create a sense of tension and urgency, adding to the immersive experience.
"Papers, Please" is a thought-provoking game that explores the themes of bureaucracy, morality, and empathy. It challenges you to consider the consequences of your actions and the impact they have on others. Are you willing to follow the rules blindly, or will you take a stand for what you believe is right?

How To Play

In Papers, Please, you play the role of an immigration officer at a border checkpoint in the fictional country of Arstotzka. Your job is to review and approve or deny the entry of people into the country based on their documents, while also balancing your own financial needs and the demands of your government.
As you progress through the game, you will encounter increasingly complex scenarios and regulations, requiring you to scrutinize the documents more closely and use your deduction skills to spot discrepancies and potential security risks. You must also be mindful of the time and the queue of people waiting to be processed, as you are penalized for making mistakes and taking too long to review documents.
One of the key elements of the game is the moral dilemma you face as an immigration officer. You will encounter individuals with compelling stories and difficult circumstances, and must decide whether to follow the regulations strictly or make exceptions for compassionate reasons. Your decisions will impact the lives of the people you interact with, as well as your own standing with your government.
To succeed in the game, you must carefully manage your finances by earning enough money to support your family while also paying for food, heating, and other necessities. You can do this by approving as many people as possible, which earns you a bonus, but also increases the likelihood of security risks slipping through. Alternatively, you can choose to be more cautious and thorough in your document reviews, but this may result in longer wait times and reduced income.
Ultimately, your goal in Papers, Please is to survive each day of your job, earning enough money to keep your family fed and warm while also fulfilling your duties as an immigration officer. You will face tough decisions, challenging scenarios, and difficult moral choices, all while managing your time and finances to ensure your own survival. Will you prioritize the needs of your family, the demands of your government, or the well-being of the people you encounter? The choice is yours in this compelling and thought-provoking game.
